Vintage Shattaline Lamp with original Fibreglass Shade - 1960s
Vintage Shattaline Lamp with original Fibreglass Shade - 1960s
The method of making the Shattaline lamp was a complete accident and went on to the must-have item in the 1960s.
SHATTALINE Limited operated from the mid-1960s for about 10 years. Products were a craft-made range of decorative items including paperweights, pen holders, candle holders, tables, table lamps and table lighters. The manufacturing process was discovered by Lewen Tugwell, a retired major in the British Army and talented sculptor had begun experimenting with cast polyester resin. This required a hardening agent or catalyst which, when accidentally mixed incorrectly, caused a crazing or "shatter" within the casting. And so the iconic Shattaline lamp was born!
The lamp listed in a gorgeous mix of yellows, reds and greens with the addition of the original spun fibreglass shade, which in itself is an iconic piece of mid-century design.
